Props

In most music videos props are used in many different contexts e.g. to create a setting, to finish off an everyday look, to draw attention to the artist/ style etc.

commonly used props: Money, chairs, outfit accessories, drink (alcohol), instruments, phones, food etc.

Because we used a female artist I've researched into what props female singers often use in their music video and I have found various results. The props usually depend on the theme and genre of the song.

This is a screen grab from Pink's song 'Raise your glass' so the prop (a beer bottle) has an obvious meaning- to create emphasis on the lyrics and song. Many artists also use props that reinforce the meaning of the song to draw attention to their work.

This big bear is a prop used in Jessie J's video 'Price Tag'. This has no relevance to the song at all bust is just a prop that is used to draw attention to Jessie and to show her quirkyness helping her create a star persona especially as this is from an early video of hers when she was just being introduced into the industry.

This is a screen shot from Leona Lewis' music video 'Trouble'. The chair and lamp draw little attention meaning most the focus is on the artist performing, which is usually what they want as it allows the audience to identify with them essentially making them more popular and selling more records/ gaining a bigger fan base.

In our video we only used candles as a prop, this is because we wanted all the attention on the artist so that her star persona can grow and the audience can identify and connect with her, allowing her to build a fan base which all pop stars have.
