Lighting workshop

Today in lesson we were learning about lighting, first we watched videos showing us various ways of lighting a video, we also watched a video on how to make our own streak filters.

Notes from the first video:
  • used a stage light on the left to highlight the right of the mans face
  • One light behind him to his left to highlight his left side to seperate him from the background
  • Key lights (small lights/ lamps) with streak filters to contrast from the foreground
  • In the very foregroup he placed fairy lights in front of the lens so that they were blurred, he did this to add depth to the video and to just make it slightly more interesting.

Notes from the second video:
  • This man used a soft box (250w) above his head on a boom to light the whole room
  • He also had a stage light to his left  to highlight that side of his face
  • Had a stage kight facing a white door to get 40% of the light reflected on his guitar/ right side
  • He turned each light off at a certain time to show what effect they had and how they added to the overall look

Notes from third video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChXEbvadyDQ
  • How to make a streak filter (costs around £400/500 to buy)
  • Use plastic packaging
  • cut 14cm by 14cm
  • Score plastic in any way you want, depending on what effect you want to get
  • Hold in place infront of camera lense with either tape or elastic bands

After we watched these videos Our teacher, Emma, showed us how to get diifferent effects from the lights we have in our college. She showed us a stage light, a smaller light which can be handheld and key lights in the back ground, she also showed us angles we can use.
She showed us how to reflect colour onto someones face (by using coloured card) and how to get shapes of lights into the scene (cutting the shapes into card and holding the card in front of the light)
She also taught us how to use the exposure setting on the college cameras.
