Ive found that some artists go for quite bold and daring looks e.g. Katy Perry. katy has created some very iconic looks (california gurlz, cake bikini) along with her geek chick style in 'Last friday night' She usually dresses up as a character in relation to the song, or just wants to stand out and create a star persona by weaing these outfits. Lady GaGa is another example of a star that dresses up in her videos, though she takes it a little further and wears these types of clothes everywhere she goes, but this has helped her publicity and she is now known for her style.
While some artists try hard to create a very noticeable look others stick to simplicity but are still able to create iconic looks fro example, Beyonce's 'Single ladies' video she wears a black leotard which is now a famous costume across the world. Though saying this she also does wear bold outfits in some videos, but these tend to fit the lyrics/ mood of the song more rather than just wearing the costume for the sake of it e.g. in 'Best thing I never had' she wears a wedding dress.
