From watching a few videos from the music genre of rap Ive found a few common conventions. For example the setting is usually a city which for different artists is portrayed in either a positive or negative way. Eminem often represents citys/  the city life in a negative way by showing violence and vandalism where as people like Jay Z often paint cities in a positive light.
In most videos the artist is shown performing to a crowd and in every video ive watched the artist is shown rapping to the camera (lip syncing).
Their costumes are often quite basic e.g designer jeans and a white top with a bit of jewellery (gold chains, diamonds etc) making the outfit look expensive. In a few of the videos expensive cars and clubs are shown emphasising the importance of money to them, whereas others tend to focus on a story line/ message of the track.
